March 6, 2023Storm Door, Screen Door, Security Door: What are the Differences?
April 19, 2023Spring has officially sprung and as the weather turns warmer and the days become longer, you can’t wait to shed those bulky winter clothes, soak up some sunshine, and breathe in some fresh air. In other words, spring is the perfect time to freshen up your surroundings, both inside and out. While you were trapped inside over the winter, there’s no doubt a lot of chores piled up and need to be attended to. By attending to those chores now, you’ll be able to kick back and really relax when summertime rolls around. With so many things to do, however, spring cleaning can be a bit overwhelming for homeowners.
Where do you start? New windows and doors? Air conditioning system inspection? Creating a list of things to do will allow you to prioritize tasks and will make the whole spring cleaning experience a bit less stressful!
What Should Homeowners Do Every Spring?
Inside First, Then Outside
Spring weather can be tricky – especially at the start of the season. While the calendar might say that it’s officially spring, it might take Mother Nature a little while to get the memo. One day, it’s sunny, warm, and glorious, and the next, it’s cold and rainy. Depending on where you live, the weather can fluctuate on an hourly basis. Because spring weather can be so unpredictable, when it comes to spring cleaning, it’s a good idea to start inside and work your way out.
Indoor Spring Cleaning Checklist
Keeping the interior of your home neat, tidy, and well-maintained is always important, no matter the season. However, there are certain things that should be attended to during the spring that will make the inside of your home feel clean and fresh.
The following are some essentials that should be on your spring cleaning list for the interior of your home.
Declutter
Get rid of things you don’t need anymore and stow items that won’t be used during the warmer weather.
Deep clean
Spring is a good time to give all surfaces a good deep cleaning. Clean your floors, countertops, ceilings, walls, windows, toilet bowls, showers, tubs, blinds, etc.
Clean appliances
You should give your appliances a good scrubbing, too. For example, the fridge, stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, dryer, etc.
Don’t forget the ventilation
Be sure to wipe down any ceiling fans and change the filters on your heating and cooling system. Depending on how long it’s been and if it’s showing any signs of trouble – unpleasant odors, strange noises, or inefficiency, for example – you might want to arrange to have your HVAC system cleaned.
Clean and change out linens
Trade in those heavy blankets and flannel sheets for lighter quilts and breathable cotton sheets. Don’t forget to clean the linens before you store them.
Check smoke and CO2 detectors
Change out the batteries and test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home.
Outdoor Spring Cleaning Checklist
When the warm weather is a bit more consistent, turn your attention to the outdoors. The following tasks will make spending time outside, soaking up the warmth and fresh air, all the more enjoyable.
Clean the gutters and inspect the roof
Rid the gutters and downspouts of all debris and check to make sure that they’re properly secured. Inspect your roof, too, to make sure that it hasn’t sustained any damage over the winter.
Clean out and prep flowerbeds
Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris from flowerbeds, plant new flowers and shrubs, and apply some fresh mulch.
Trimming and pruning
Trim and prune trees and shrubs. Cut back overgrown branches and limbs, and remove any that are dead.
Power washing
Give outdoor surfaces, like the driveway, walkways, patios, decks, window screens, outdoor furniture, and even the siding and fence a good power washing.
