Bathtub to Shower Conversion

Thinking of turning your bathtub into a shower? That might just be one of the best decisions you could make for your bathroom. Not to mention, a bathtub to shower conversion is the perfect winter home improvement project. There are a ton of great reasons to go this route when creating your bathroom décor. In fact, as we will see, it should almost be a no-brainer for an awful lot of scenarios. In this post, we will examine the benefits of a bathtub to shower conversion and help you decide if this is the right decision for you.

What is a Bathtub to Shower Conversion?

Chances are that you will have encountered bathtub-to-shower conversions in the past, even if you weren’t aware of it. A bathtub to shower conversion simply means that instead of installing an entirely new and separate shower, you have taken your existing bathtub and added in a shower/converted it into a shower.

This can take many forms. In some cases, this will mean that your shower replaces the bathtub and takes up the space that was once there. More often, it means that you will convert the bathtub to serve a dual purpose by adding a glass door: so that it is at once a tub and shower.

What Are the Benefits of a Bathtub to Shower Conversion?

Optimize Bathroom Space

So, why might you wish to do this? Firstly, converting your bath is a smart choice in terms of creating more space in your bathroom. This way, you get the benefits of having both a shower and a bathtub in the same room. This will be a shower when you need one, and a bathtub when you need that instead. While you can install shower doors on top of the bathtub, many people opt for shower curtains instead.

With more space in your bathroom, you may find it looks cleaner more often, and you’ll be able to stretch out and not feel cramped. This is also better for ventilation. You could even consider adding another installation: whether that means a bidet, a second sink (great for couples), etc.

And of course, if you have a small bathroom space – in an ensuite for example – then using a combined form-factor might be the only option you have if you want to enjoy both things.

Shower and Bath All in One

This also gives you more options for the ways you want to use that unit that can only come from having a combined unit. For example, with a bathtub/shower, you can take a nice bath and then wash your hair with a handheld shower nozzle afterward. You could alternatively have a bath and then rinse yourself off with the shower. This is actually advisable if you happen to be using a lot of bubble baths.

Or, how about standing your dog in the bathtub and showering them down with a retractable shower head? This is also a great option for kids. In short, this is a practical solution that too many people fail to recognize, to their own detriment. So much so, that some may even consider installing both a standalone walk-in shower AND a converted bathtub shower in the same room!

Cost Savings

Another big benefit, of course, can be the cost. Because you aren’t installing an entirely new unit, it is much more affordable. It is also much simpler (and quicker) for a bathroom remodeling service to install a shower conversion. This makes it a strong choice for anyone that is pushed for time. This is also a great option for those who want to save money or don’t have a large amount of cash to sink into a bathroom remodel.

What Are the Downsides?

Of course, no solution is perfect and a bathtub-to-shower remodel may not be for everyone. In particular, this option has a couple of minor drawbacks:

  • A standalone shower is slightly better at keeping the water in and may be warmer on the whole. Some people prefer this experience.
  • Having a standalone shower means that someone can shower at the same time as another person is taking a bath. This is a fairly unusual use-case scenario, however, so it should not factor heavily into your decision.

If you have a lot of space and particularly enjoy an enclosed shower, then you may consider converting your tub to a shower. For everyone else: a tub to shower conversion makes a whole lot of sense!
