Bathroom Renovation Essentials: Planning and Execution Tips
July 19, 2024What Causes Warped Windows & How to Fix It?
August 30, 2024Window replacements are one of the most common types of home repair jobs, and it’s fair to start by saying that the majority of people will need to replace a window in their home at least once. Measuring is an important part of window replacement, and you might already have heard the phrase “measure twice and cut once.” This is crucial to remember when measuring a window for replacement. Familiarize yourself with the parts of the window, then follow these tips and tricks to save you time when measuring (and installing) a replacement window. Here’s how to measure a window for replacement.
How to Measure A Window For Replacement?
Remember The Windowsill Gap
The most common mistake people make when measuring their frames is forgetting about the gap between the end of the window and the sill. When measuring for replacement, the size of the glass you’re going to install has to be larger than the frame. If not, the window won’t fit in the frame properly.
It’s similar to measuring pieces of cloth, where there has to be an overlap for the stitching to adhere to. Save yourself time when measuring your window, and always mind the gap.
Measure the Window’s Width
First, start by measuring the width of the window. Make sure you’re using a standardized measuring tool, and start from the edge of the frame to the other edge. Repeat the exact same steps, then make sure that you have accurate measurements.
Measure from the inside of the jamb on one side of the window to the inside on the other side. Use the smallest measurement.
Mind the gap, and add the marginal difference where the glass fits to the frame. Without this, your measurements aren’t nearly as accurate as you think.
Window Height Measurements
The next thing you should do is measure the height, going from the top of the frame right to the bottom. Like before, you should make sure to add the marginal difference where the glass should fit. And, one more piece of advice, note the unit of measurement in your final notes.
Consider the Window’s Depth
There’s one more step left in the process before you can consider it a window that’s been well-measured. It’s not just about the window’s width and height, but also about the window’s depth. That is, how far into the frame or windowsill the window fits.
The answer isn’t the same for all home windows, and there’s no standard size. So, measure the depth, and mark it clearly on your measurements.
Standardize Your Units
Have you ever been confused by something that states the numbers but doesn’t list the appropriate unit of measurement? How will you know what you’re going to need?
Remember to standardize your units. Mark clearly on any notes and frames whether you’re working with inches or centimeters.
While the assumption is usually inches, you can save a lot of time by just writing it down the first time. Make sure that nobody assumes, or has to stop the job to ask.
Always Measure It Twice
Measure twice, and cut once. This is a sentence you’ll see in many carpentry handbooks. However, it’s also a sentence that would do you good to remember for finding the correct measurements in window installation.
Measure a window twice to prevent having any issues with fitting them later. All it takes is a few minutes for what could have wasted hours of time.
The process of accurately measuring for window replacement is similar for single and double-hung windows.
Laser Measuring Window Replacements
Why measure manually? A tape measure is a handy toolkit essential, but that doesn’t make it the best way to measure anything anymore.
Laser technology provides an exact measurement with almost zero effort from the user. Except for pointing and clicking!
